TRISHA BROWN DANCE COMPANY 2010 WINTER INTENSIVE
Monday-Friday, January 4-8 (Mark Morris Studios)
"Trisha Brown is not a choreographer who invites the viewers to sit back and let the dancing wash over them."
~Anna Kisselgoff, New York Times, 1996
Technique Class: each class will explore fundamentals that are integral to understanding the range and detail of the Trisha Brown Dance Company movement style. Emphasis is placed on learning movement as the Company does: with attention to detail, spatial clarity, performance quality, and an awareness of dancing with others. Classes begin with a warm-up emphasizing the coordination of alignment, breath, and weight to bring space, direction, and flow of energy through the joints. Concepts emphasized in technique will be applied to a work from a different period in the Company repertory.
LOCATION: MARK MORRIS DANCE STUDIOS, Brooklyn, NY
Morning Technique & Repertory: For MG: The Movie
with Cori Olinghouse
10:00am-1:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. This class will explore the choreography For MG: The Movie (1991) from the Back to Zero cycle. Trisha, in her words, was exploring “breaking the rules of acceptable gesture, mystery, and sleight of body….One of the on-going metaphors in For MG… was time. Not metered time or measured time but stranger notions like the volume of time, past time, time peeling away.”
Afternoon Technique & Repertory: Twelve Ton Rose
with Mariah Maloney
2:00pm-5:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. In this class, students will learn complex, assymetrical phrase work from Twelve Ton Rose (1996), the second work in Brown’s Music cycle. Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice said this after seeing the work: “I imagine dancing anyone else’s choreography after Brown’s would be hard. You’d feel like you’d gone from researching high-energy particles to taking freshman science.”
Lunchtime Video Showings
1:30-2:00pm
There will be daily screenings of Trisha Brown Dance Company repertory.
LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:
Mark Morris Dance Center, 3 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217-1415. By subway take the C to Lafayette, or the B, Q, 2, 3, 4, 5, to Atlantic Avenue, D, M, N, R, to Pacific Avenue, or G to Fulton. www.mmdg.org

Teacher Biographies:
Mariah Maloney was a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1995-2002. She performed as a featured soloist and ensemble dancer, creating original roles in Trisha Brown’s Music cycle as well performing the legendary works: Set and Reset, Newark, Astral Converted and For MG: The Movie, among others. For Mariah, the greatest pedagogical reward comes when she observes a student’s transformation and recognizes that her teaching methods and presence have helped facilitate the student’s growth and development. She focuses on breath and body awareness to help students develop proper alignment, full range of motion, greater coordination, and stability. Today she continues her relationship with TBDC by serving as an international guest artist and directing re-staging projects. In December 2008, The Columbia College Chicago Dance Center premiered Mariah’s re-staging of Set and Reset/Reset. Mariah’s choreography has been presented in New York at Judson Church, The Kitchen, St. Marks Church, BRIC Theater and The Brooklyn Museum. Maloney earned a BFA from Purchase College and a MFA from Hollins/ADF. Mariah is currently an assistant professor at The College at Brockport SUNY.
Cori Olinghouse danced with the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2002 to 2006. She was an original cast member of how long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume...She also worked with Brown on O Zlozony /O Composite for the Paris Opera Ballet, which she later performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Cori will finish her certification in the Alexander Technique in February 2010; her teaching is highly informed by this method. She teaches regularly at TBDC intensives and workshops, and has taught at Bennington College, Fordham University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, Sushi Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, London Contemporary Dance School, and Tseh Moscow Summer Dance School. She recently performed in Bill Irwin's The Happiness Lecture at the Philadelphia Theater Company. Her own work has been presented at Dixon Place, Bennington College, The Brooklyn Museum, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Judson Church, Spoke the Hub, and the Movement Research Improvisation Festival. She is currently a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.

Focus of the meeting is the complex coreography by Trisha Brown that takes form as a continuous exploration of the space, not only for choosing non-traditional places to stage her dance, but also because of questioning the idea of space itself as an essential element of her work, which also involves the last theatrical production. A new scenario has literally opened, where coreography and the most advanced of figurative arts (Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Body Art and Performing Art) have interacted closely.

Trisha Brown Dance Company
Choreography by Trisha Brown
“Strong emotional resonances and a sense of mystery arise from the dancers’ delicate actions…provokes thunderous, ecstatic applause.”
—Dance Magazine on O zlozony/ O composite
A founding member of the revolutionary Judson Dance Theater, Trisha Brown is an icon of contemporary dance who, for five decades running, has continued to innovate, masterfully traversing the disparate worlds of downtown dance, ballet, opera, and the visual arts. At the center of it all: her rippling, quietly heroic movement.
Last at BAM with L’Orfeo (1999 Spring Season), Brown returns with a career-spanning program. In Planes, a marvelously vertical dance, an impressionistic film of New York fills a wall which three dancers scale with determination. Equally enthralling is the 1979 masterwork Glacial Decoy, a gorgeous rush of entrances and exits set within Robert Rauschenberg's black-and-white décor.
Commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet and performed by three of its principals, O zlozony /O composite (2004), in its US premiere, is a classical/modern fusion with liquid gestures—at once evocative and mysterious—with an affecting score by Laurie Anderson and a set by painter Vija Celmins. Completing the program is the world premiere of L’Amour au théâtre, a Baroque-influenced dance work that will serve as the creative foundation for an operatic evening featuring music by Jean-Philippe Rameau premiering in 2010.
Running time: 110min with intermission

description:
Technique Class: each class will explore fundamentals that are integral to understanding the range and detail of the Trisha Brown Dance Company movement style. Emphasis is placed on learning movement as the Company does: with attention to detail, spatial clarity, performance quality, and an awareness of dancing with others. Classes begin with a warm-up emphasizing the coordination of alignment, breath, and weight to bring space, direction, and flow of energy through the joints. Concepts emphasized in the warm-up will be applied to a work from a different period in the Company repertory.
WEEK ONE
Morning Technique & Repertory: Glacial Decoy
with Cori Olinghouse
10:00am-1:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. Students will learn full-bodied phrase work from, Glacial Decoy (1979), Trisha Brown's first work for the proscenium, which she has described as "about change-of direction, shape, velocity, mood, state. There are total, instantaneous shifts from one state to another. It's unpredictable, unlikely, continuous, always going in an unexpected direction."
Afternoon Technique & Repertory: Newark
with Lance Gries
2:00pm-5:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. Concepts emphasized in the warm-up, such as use of weight, movement initiation, and spatial clarity will be applied to phrases from Newark (1987), a work from the Valiant cycle, in which Trisha was exploring what it means for dancers to approach their physical limits. In Brown's words, Newark is "powerful, geometric dancing."
WEEK TWO
Morning Technique & Repertory: Locus and Opal Loop
with Diane Madden
10:00am-1:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. First performed in a SoHo loft in 1980, Opal Loop is from Brown's cycle of work entitled Unstable Molecular Structure, which is composed of movement that she describes as "about words that begin with 'S': sequential, seamless, silky, sensual." Locus (1975) is organized around 27 points located on an imaginary cube surrounding the dancer. Brown says of Locus, "I wanted to analyze, graph the immediate space around my body in an attempt to understand my elusive movement style in order to teach it to others."
Afternoon Technique & Repertory: Five Part Weather Invention
with Stacy Spence
2:00pm-5:00pm
For technique portion, see description above. With Five Part Weather Invention (1999), Trisha Brown began her jazz trilogy, created in collaboration with trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas. Improvisation, rhythm, and humor are the focuses of this exuberant work. "5 Part Weather Invention is as unpredictable as weather and as rife with disciplined recklessness as first-class jazz." Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice
